Significance of Mental Health in Schools
Mental health is extremely important in schools since it has a direct impact on students’ overall well-being and achievement. When children and young people are dealing with mental health concerns like anxiety or depression, their ability to focus, concentrate, and recall material suffers greatly. This can eventually impede their academic achievement and capacity to realise their full potential.
The British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) have campaigned rigorously for the provision of access to mental health professionals in schools. They cite issues such as family pressures, cost of living, exam stress and the COVID pandemic among others that are affecting the mental health of children and young people currently. Their research reveals that school-based counselling is often transformative for students, enabling them to cope with present circumstances and do well in the future. It provides vital support for those children and young people who do not meet the threshold for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). It provides early intervention before concerns escalate to more serious problems (BACP 2023). Furthermore, a bill to make provision to require every school to have access to a qualified mental health professional is currently being debated in Parliament, highlighting the urgency and significance of our children’s well-being (House of Lords 2023).

School Counsellors
School counsellors play an important role in recognising and managing students’ mental health concerns. They provide a secure and private environment in which they may voice their worries, give advice on coping methods, and connect them to relevant resources and solutions. Students can benefit from having access to qualified mental health specialists to help them manage their academic path and improve their overall well-being.

Emotional assistance
School counsellors provide consistent emotional assistance to pupils by listening and validating their feelings. This emotional support helps children develop resilience and good coping processes, which improves their capacity to deal with stress and manage difficult circumstances. Furthermore, having a trustworthy adult to confide in may help reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, encouraging a pleasant school atmosphere and instilling a sense of belonging in all students. School counsellors play an important role in teaching appropriate coping mechanisms. By providing students with these skills, they are better able to manage the strains of school and life, lowering the risk of academic burnout and mental health problems. Finally, the development of coping skills assists them not just while they are in school but also prepares them for success in their future aspirations.

Mental Health Support
School therapy can help to:
- identify and treat mental health issues such as depression or anxiety.
- Provide counselling services and referrals to mental health providers.
- Promote mental well-being through stress management and self-care routines.
- Establish a supportive atmosphere that promotes personal and academic success.
- Address mental health challenges so that schools may help their students attain greater achievement and enjoyment.
- Collaborate with parents/guardians to create effective intervention programmes and support networks for students with mental health issues.
- Provide tools and techniques for managing and enhancing mental health, such as access to support groups, and self-help materials.
- Provide opportunities for school personnel to get training and professional development to improve their knowledge and abilities in identifying and assisting students with mental health issues.
- Create a culture of empathy and inclusiveness within the school community so that children feel secure and supported when seeking treatment for their mental health issues.
